RINVOQ USE

RINVOQ is a prescription medicine used to treat adults and children 12 years of age and older with moderate to severe eczema (atopic dermatitis) that did not respond to previous treatment and their eczema is not well controlled with other pills or injections, including biologic medicines, or the use of other pills or injections is not recommended.

LOGAN: My rash would really affect me after I got out the pool because my skin would instantly dry up. It would itch and I would just start scratching. It was pretty bad.

My name is Logan and I have moderate to severe eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis.

I started RINVOQ March of 2023.

Because RINVOQ improved my itch and rash, I feel more secure in my skin.

LOGAN: This is my mom.

CASSANDRA: My name is Cassandra.

LOGAN: I think you threw me in the pool like at two.

CASSANDRA:  Yeah, pretty much, yeah.

LOGAN: Every time I get out the water, or when I'm swimming, I can just hear, “Go Logan, go!”

Before I would have like flakes on my face, and I started getting really insecure about my rash because my friends would start picking up on it and they would always ask me, “oh is – are you okay?”

CASSANDRA: Logan’s rash started to look very disturbing because it was changing colors. 

She was on several different medications.

LOGAN: It felt discouraging when they wouldn’t work.

CASSANDRA: That’s really what made me look into making sure that I did everything I could for her to make sure she was okay.

When we first went to see Dr. Dasilva, I mentioned to him that he wasn’t the first dermatologist we had seen and I was very concerned because I had watched her rash change drastically.

DR. RUIZ DASILVA: I'm Diego Ruiz Dasilva and I am Logan’s dermatologist.

When I first saw Logan, there were scratch marks, excoriations, and lichenification, we call thickened skin, pretty much all over her arm and a lot of her body. 

And though I thought RINVOQ would be a fantastic treatment option for you, it was awesome to talk to Cassandra and hear that Logan was doing great already even just a few days after.

LOGAN: I started noticing as soon as I got out of the water, I wasn’t itching as much. To run my hand on my skin, I was like, hey, this feels... this feels different. It just felt better, and that was a relief.

CASSANDRA: After a few weeks of taking RINVOQ, I really noticed that her skin was clearing up.

LOGAN: People at school started noticing how my skin was getting better. That was the big moment for me. They were saying, "Your skin looks so clear. Like what are you taking? Like what are you using?”

CASSANDRA: Dr. Dasilva, I thank you.

LOGAN: You actually listened to how I felt. I just felt like, he’s actually getting how I feel and how bad my eczema’s been affecting me.

CASSANDRA: If your child is saying that something is wrong, please listen. Definitely explore all options. And be okay with saying to a dermatologist that this is not working for us.

LOGAN: If someone like me was thinking about using RINVOQ, I would say talk to someone. Talk to your parent. Talk to any dermatologist and really figure out how you can help your skin.

Safety Considerations

RINVOQ (upadacitinib) may cause serious side effects, including:

  • Serious infections. RINVOQ can lower ability to fight infections. Serious infections, some fatal, occurred, including tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
  • Increased risk of death in people age 50+ with at least 1 heart disease risk factor.
  • Cancer and immune system problems. Increased risk of some cancers, including lymphoma and skin. Current or past smokers have higher risk for lymphoma and lung cancer.
  • Increased risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death in people 50+ with at least 1 heart disease risk factor, especially in current or past smokers.
  • Blood clots, some fatal, in veins of the legs or lungs and arteries. This occurred more often in people 50+ with at least 1 heart disease risk factor.
  • Serious allergic reactions. Do not take if allergic to RINVOQ or its ingredients.
  • Tears in the stomach or intestines; changes in certain laboratory test results.
