Amanda & Randy: RINVOQ relief is a family affair

RINVOQ USE

RINVOQ is a prescription medicine used to treat adults and children 12 years of age and older with moderate to severe eczema (atopic dermatitis) that did not respond to previous treatment and their eczema is not well controlled with other pills or injections, including biologic medicines, or the use of other pills or injections is not recommended.

AMANDA: Now after RINVOQ, my itch is significantly better.

Actually, I was at work and my coworkers noticed how clear my skin was getting.

I’m Amanda and I have moderate to severe eczema.

So, I’ve been on RINVOQ since May of 2022.

For my 13th birthday, I got Randy. He was born four days before my birthday and came home on my birthday.

RANDY: Yep. That’s my sister.

I also have moderate to severe eczema.

I’ve been on RINVOQ since June of 2022.

Within a few days, my itch had decreased. It wasn’t near as bad as it was.

I had more of the painful rashes with eczema. The rash was—it just looked angry is the best way to describe it.

AMANDA: Mine it was just the itch. It was constant, nonstop. At night, I would catch myself itching. I would actually wake up scratching. Sometimes I had the pain, sometimes he had the itch. So, we could kind of relate on those spectrums and the fact that we never had any relief.

RANDY: When we went to the beach, the sand would stick into the rashes and it wasn’t pleasant.

AMANDA: And plus, the saltwater kind of burns.

RANDY: Whenever I’d come up with an idea that would possibly help with my eczema, I’d tell her and we’d both try it or if it worked for me, I’d tell her, and she would go on and try it.

AMANDA: Vice versa.

I was on two different types of injections...and nothing really worked.

RANDY: I remember you were devastated when it got on your face.

AMANDA: Yes. I couldn’t stand it. I was okay everywhere else. Everywhere else I could cover up, but my face I could not cover up. And I was embarrassed and I just had enough.

So, I just immediately had to call a doctor and see what could be done, see what he could do.

RANDY: So, I was in the middle of taking a test and then I just hear someone knocking at my door. I didn’t—

AMANDA: I did not know you were taking a test.

RANDY: I didn’t even have time to open my door. She just busted open the door. So, she started telling me about how RINVOQ was helping her. And I’m a little bit shocked at that point because—

AMANDA: I was very excited. I'm like, “oh my gosh, look at my hand, look at my hand. It’s so much better than it was.”

After a couple of weeks of taking RINVOQ, my rash was mostly gone.

The itch I noticed started going away significantly.

RANDY: She told me to go talk to our dermatologist about it. I walked in there and said, “Could I talk to you about RINVOQ?”

After about two weeks, I was not itching that much.

AMANDA: He actually came to my house, knocking on my door that time.

RANDY: I gave her time to open the door though.

AMANDA: I immediately noticed his rash was so much better. It was starting to go away. It was starting to fade.

RANDY: It’s been a more pleasurable experience going anywhere sandy.

AMANDA: So now it’s fun being in the ocean, being in the saltwater. I actually get to enjoy myself.

If you’re still struggling with an itch or a rash, I’d definitely recommend that you see your doctor and see what they can do for you because RINVOQ’s really helped me.

RANDY: Advocating for yourself is really important because no one knows how eczema affects you like you do.

Safety Considerations

RINVOQ (upadacitinib) may cause serious side effects, including:

  • Serious infections. RINVOQ can lower ability to fight infections. Serious infections, some fatal, occurred, including tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
  • Increased risk of death in people age 50+ with at least 1 heart disease risk factor.
  • Cancer and immune system problems. Increased risk of some cancers, including lymphoma and skin. Current or past smokers have higher risk for lymphoma and lung cancer.
  • Increased risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death in people 50+ with at least 1 heart disease risk factor, especially in current or past smokers.
  • Blood clots, some fatal, in veins of the legs or lungs and arteries. This occurred more often in people 50+ with at least 1 heart disease risk factor.
  • Serious allergic reactions. Do not take if allergic to RINVOQ or its ingredients.
  • Tears in the stomach or intestines; changes in certain laboratory test results.
