What is GIANT CELL ARTERITIS (GCA)?

GCA is a rare autoimmune condition and a form of vasculitis that causes inflammation of blood vessels. It primarily affects the arteries in the head and neck, especially the temples, and is also known as temporal arteritis.

Signs & symptoms of GCA

Inflammation from GCA causes arteries to narrow or become blocked, which can restrict blood flow and lead to:

  • Double vision or vision loss
  • Headaches or scalp tenderness
  • Arm or leg pain
  • Jaw pain

Without treatment, GCA can result in serious health complications, like permanent blindness. Correctly treating GCA will reduce the risk of lasting health issues. If you have GCA and experience any symptoms related to vision, seek medical treatment immediately.

Causes of GCA

At this time, the cause of GCA is unknown and there is no known way to prevent GCA from developing. Early diagnosis and the right treatment plan are key in preventing serious, lasting complications of GCA.

Who gets GCA?

Like most autoimmune diseases, GCA is more commonly found in women. People over 50 years old are more likely to be affected by GCA, while people in their 70s have the highest rate of diagnosis of any age group.

Having polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) may also increase the risk of developing GCA.

RINVOQ is not indicated to treat PMR.

Women are 2 times more likely than men to be diagnosed with GCA
