About ankylosing spondylitis (AS)
AS is a chronic (ongoing) condition. That means symptoms may keep coming back and last a long time. Once someone has AS, they may always have it. Although the causes of AS are unknown, it's possible that environment, different stressors, and family history may play a role. AS can be passed down through the HLA-B27 gene. Taking a blood test may detect this protein and help make a diagnosis.

Back of body
What is inflammation?
AS is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine. When you have AS, an immune system response causes inflammation in healthy joints. The inflammation contributes to pain and stiffness.
Inflammation is your body's normal response to protect against something your immune system thinks will cause harm. When excess inflammation doesn't go away, it can lead to conditions including AS.
Prolonged inflammation can lead to the following symptoms
When you are living with AS, the inflammation does not go away over time. This can lead to the following symptoms:
- Spine stiffness that is usually worse in the morning and at night
- Back pain and stiffness that get worse with inactivity and better with physical activity
- Pain and stiffness in alternating sides of the body—starting at the lower back and buttocks
- Symptoms lasting more than 3 months
Taking RINVOQ
It’s important to remember that AS is a chronic, or ongoing, condition. Taking RINVOQ as prescribed is important as AS can persist even though you don’t have symptoms.
RINVOQ must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor
- Take RINVOQ once a day, every day
- RINVOQ can be taken with or without food. Avoid food or drink containing grapefruit
- Do not split, crush, or chew the pill
Call your healthcare provider if you see medication residue (a whole tablet or tablet pieces) in your stool.
What should you do if you miss a dose?
- Call the doctor about the missed dose
- Set up a visual cue or reminder that will help you remember to take RINVOQ
- Use treatment reminders and fill out your treatment log in the RINVOQ Complete App, so you’ll know when/if you have taken RINVOQ
Check in with the doctor
Regular check-ins and open discussions with the doctor can help you stay on track with a prescribed treatment plan.

Track symptoms
Use the RINVOQ Complete App to keep track of symptoms and share them with your doctor.

How RINVOQ works
With AS, an overactive immune system may cause excess inflammation, contributing to symptoms like back pain and stiffness. RINVOQ helps regulate your overactive immune system and works inside your cells to block certain signals that are thought to cause inflammation.
Because JAK inhibitors, including RINVOQ, affect the immune system, they can lower the ability to fight infections and may cause other serious side effects. It's important to talk to your healthcare provider about the possible side effects of prescription treatments.

RINVOQ is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with active ankylosing spondylitis when 1 or more medicines called tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers have been used, and did not work well or could not be tolerated. It is not known if RINVOQ is safe and effective in children with ankylosing spondylitis.
