ARTHRITIS

About active psoriatic arthritis (PsA)

PsA is a chronic (ongoing) condition. This means symptoms may keep coming back and last a long time. It can cause inflammation of the joints and tissues around the joints. It can also limit your ability to do simple, everyday activities.

What is inflammation?

Normally, the immune system protects your body from disease by attacking bacteria and viruses. But with PsA, the immune system malfunctions and attacks your own body's healthy tissues, specifically the joints.

Inflammation is your body's normal response to protect against something your immune system thinks will cause harm. When excess inflammation caused by your immune system doesn't go away, it can lead to conditions like PsA.

How the immune system triggers inflammation

When you are living with PsA, the inflammation does not go away over time. This can lead to the following PsA symptoms:

  • Joint pain, swelling, and stiffness
  • Irreversible joint damage
  • Skin plaques
  • Fatigue

Helpful tips for managing PsA

Here are some steps you can take to help you manage your PsA symptoms.

Taking RINVOQ

It’s important to remember that PsA is a chronic, or ongoing, condition. Taking RINVOQ as prescribed is important as PsA can persist even though you don’t have symptoms.

RINVOQ must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor

  • Take RINVOQ once a day, every day
  • RINVOQ can be taken with or without food. Avoid food or drink containing grapefruit
  • Do not split, crush, or chew the pill

Call your healthcare provider if you see medication residue (a whole tablet or tablet pieces) in your stool.

What should you do if you miss a dose?

  • Call the doctor about the missed dose
  • Set up a visual cue or reminder that will help you remember to take RINVOQ
  • Use treatment reminders and fill out your treatment log in the RINVOQ Complete App, so you’ll know when/if you have taken RINVOQ

Check in with the doctor

Regular check-ins and open discussions with the doctor can help you stay on track with a prescribed treatment plan.

How RINVOQ works

With PsA, your overactive immune system attacks your joints. RINVOQ helps regulate your overactive immune system to help stop the attack. RINVOQ works inside your cells to block certain signals that are thought to cause inflammation.

Because JAK inhibitors, including RINVOQ, affect the immune system, they can lower the ability to fight infections and may cause other serious side effects. It's important to talk to your healthcare provider about the possible side effects of prescription treatments.
