WITH MODERATE TO SEVERE ULCERATIVE COLITIS

For adults with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis (UC) in whom TNF blockers did not work well.

About ulcerative colitis (UC)

UC belongs to a larger group of conditions called inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). UC is a chronic (ongoing, long-term) condition where inflammation in the large intestine (colon and rectum) can lead to symptoms over time. When you are living with UC, your overactive immune system causes inflammation that leads to more than just symptoms, it damages the colon lining.

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is your body’s normal response to protect against something your immune system thinks will cause harm. When excess inflammation caused by your immune system doesn’t go away, it can lead to conditions like UC.

How the immune system triggers inflammation

For people with UC, the immune system mistakenly harms healthy cells in the inner lining of the large intestine or colon, leading to inflammation. Chronic inflammation can contribute to UC symptoms, which may include:

  • Sudden accidents or bowel urgency
  • Abdominal pain
  • Frequent bathroom trips
  • Fatigue
  • Bloody stools

Helpful tips for managing UC

Here are some steps you can take to help you manage your UC symptoms.

Taking RINVOQ

It’s important to remember that UC is a chronic, or ongoing, condition. Taking RINVOQ as prescribed is important as UC can persist even though you don’t have symptoms.

RINVOQ must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor

  • Take RINVOQ once a day, every day
  • RINVOQ can be taken with or without food. Avoid food or drink containing grapefruit
  • Do not split, crush, or chew the pill

Call your healthcare provider if you see medication residue (a whole tablet or tablet pieces) in your stool.

What should you do if you miss a dose?

  • Call the doctor about the missed dose
  • Set up a visual cue or reminder to help you remember to take RINVOQ
  • Use treatment reminders and fill out your treatment log in the RINVOQ Complete App, so you know when/if you have taken RINVOQ

Check in with your doctor

Regular check-ins and open discussions with the doctor can help you stay on track with a prescribed treatment plan.

How RINVOQ works

RINVOQ works by targeting a source of inflammation caused by a naturally occurring protein called JAK (Janus kinase). RINVOQ works with your body to fight the inflammation that can lead to UC symptoms and colon lining damage.

Because JAK inhibitors, including RINVOQ, affect the immune system, they can lower the ability to fight infections and may cause other serious side effects. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about the possible side effects of prescription treatments.

AVO: You may be used to thinking of inflammation as redness or swelling. When you’re healthy, inflammation is one of your body’s defenses against things that can hurt you or make you sick.

AVO: But, there is such a thing as too much inflammation. That’s the case with UC, where the inner lining of your colon gets inflamed even when your body doesn’t need the protection. Inflammation can build up, causing more damage over time.

TEXT ON SCREEN: WITH UC,
you may be wondering why your immune system doesn’t know when to stop making inflammation.

AVO: With UC, you may be wondering why your immune system doesn’t know when to stop making inflammation. Let’s take a look.

AVO: Your body has many natural pathways involved in inflammation. They pass along information to help your immune system figure out when and where inflammation should happen. One of those pathways involves proteins known as Janus kinase, or JAK proteins.

TEXT ON SCREEN: JAK

AVO: With UC, some JAK proteins receive too many signals, causing your immune system to create too much inflammation and start to damage the colon.

AVO: That’s where RINVOQ, a once-daily pill, can help. RINVOQ is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis in whom TNF blockers did not work well.

RINVOQ

AVO: RINVOQ stops the activity of some JAK proteins. That means when you have too much inflammation, RINVOQ can help regulate your overactive immune system.

AVO: RINVOQ is a once-daily pill that travels through the bloodstream, helping to reduce inflammation and give your colon lining the chance to repair from the buildup of damage.

TEXT ON SCREEN: IN CLINICAL STUDIES, RINVOQ WAS PROVEN TO HELP DELIVER:

Rapid symptom relief as early as 2 weeks*

*Based on the frequency of bowel movements and the amount of bloody stools.

Remission in 8 weeks, with many people in lasting remission even at 1 year

Visible improvement of the colon lining

AVO: In clinical studies RINVOQ was proven to help deliver rapid symptom relief, lasting remission, and visible improvement of the colon lining.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

RINVOQ may cause serious side effects, including:

  • Serious infections. RINVOQ can lower your ability to fight infections. Serious infections, some fatal, occurred while taking RINVOQ, including tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
  • Increased risk of death in people 50 years and older with at least 1 heart disease risk factor.
  • Cancer and immune system problems. RINVOQ may increase your risk of certain cancers, including lymphoma and skin cancer. Current or past smokers are at higher risk for lymphoma and lung cancer.
  • Increased risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death in people 50 years and older with at least 1 heart disease risk factor, especially in current or past smokers.
  • Blood clots, some fatal, in the veins of the legs or lungs and arteries. This occurred more often in people 50 years and older with at least 1 heart disease risk factor.
  • Serious allergic reactions. Do not take if allergic to RINVOQ or any of its ingredients.
  • Tears in the stomach or intestines and changes in certain laboratory test results.

RINVOQ results

In clinical studies, RINVOQ helped people living with UC experience remission at 8 weeks and 1 year.

Plus, RINVOQ helped deliver:

  • Rapid relief from UC symptoms (fewer bowel movements and bloody stools) in as early as 2 weeks
  • Powerful results
    • No bowel urgency, no abdominal pain, and significantly reduced fatigue at 8 weeks
    • Steroid-free remission at 1 year
    • Visible colon lining repair,* even at 1 year
*Areas that were visually assessed may not represent repair of the entire colon lining.
  • Long-term results
    • In another study, many people were in remission, even at ~3 years
In a less rigorous study with data available at ~3 years, physicians and patients knew that RINVOQ was being used, which may have influenced results. Results measured in RINVOQ-treated patients who met clinical response at 8 weeks (defined by decrease in stool frequency, rectal bleeding and endoscopic improvement).

Understanding the possible side effects of RINVOQ

Always consider the benefits and risks of taking RINVOQ and discuss with your doctor.
