How RINVOQ works—know the science

With ulcerative colitis (UC), your immune system mistakenly causes too much inflammation of the colon lining. Over time, uncontrolled inflammation can lead to colon lining damage and UC symptoms.

For moderate to severe UC, your doctor may start you on a TNF blocker such as HUMIRA® or REMICADE®. TNF blockers are injections or infusions that prevent one source of inflammation—excess production of TNF protein in the body. TNF blockers work well for some people, but not for everyone. If your UC is not improving, your doctor may recommend RINVOQ.

RINVOQ is different. RINVOQ is a JAK inhibitor, a drug that targets inflammation caused by a naturally occurring protein called JAK (Janus kinase). RINVOQ works with your body to fight the inflammation that can lead to UC symptoms and colon lining damage.

Because JAK inhibitors, including RINVOQ, affect the immune system, they can lower the ability to fight infections and may cause other serious side effects. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about the possible side effects of prescription treatments. Learn more about side effects of RINVOQ.
